Area Code 812 History and Coverage

Assigned in 1947, 812 area code was one of Indiana’s three original North American Numbering Plan codes, together with 219 and 317. Its boundaries remained largely unchanged for decades, making it the last of those original Indiana codes to receive long-term numbering relief.

Growing demand for wireless service, business lines, fax machines, and other communications services gradually reduced the supply of available numbers. Early forecasts placed exhaustion much sooner, though number-conservation measures, including 1,000-block number pooling, extended the code’s lifespan by about a decade.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved an all-services distributed overlay in July 2013 after a public process that included comment periods and field hearings across the region. Area code 930 entered service in 2015 over the same territory as 812, allowing established 812 numbers to remain in use while additional numbers could be assigned under the new code. The 2015 overlay was the first major addition to the 812 numbering region since its postwar assignment.
