Area Code 930 History and Coverage
Area code 930 was implemented in March 2015 as the reliever area code to serve alongside the existing 812 numbering plan area of Indiana. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved the use of this area code on July 31, 2013 in anticipation of the exhaustion of available telephone numbers in 812 area in 2015.
The commission selected an overlay arrangement, placing 930 across the full territory already served by 812. This approach preserved the existing geographic boundaries while providing additional numbering capacity for new residential, business, wireless, and other telecommunications services. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator assigned 930 for this purpose.
Regulators considered the change through a year-long proceeding that included a seven-month public comment period and ten field hearings across the affected region. The process reflected growing demand for telephone numbers as mobile devices, competitive carriers, and newer communications services drew on the available supply. Area code 812 had served the region since 1947, making 930 the first additional code introduced for that long-standing Indiana territory.
