Area Code 820 History and Coverage

Area code 820 became active in the number plan area on June 30, 2018. Its introduction as an overlay was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in May 2017 due to projected need for additional numbering resources for 805 area code. With an overlay, a new area code is introduced into an existing service area where both of them will coexist.

The territory’s earlier numbering history begins with 805, which was created in 1957 through a geographic split from 213. California’s phone map was far less divided at the time, and 805 initially covered a much broader section of the state. The 1999 geographic split created 661 area code and decreased the 805 footprint down to the territory oriented towards the Central Coast, which later received 820 area code.

Planning for the new code reflected continued demand for telephone numbers across the region. NANPA projections placed 805 exhaustion in the fourth quarter of 2018, then moved the forecast forward to the fourth quarter of 2017 as code demand increased. The combined 805/820 territory also includes small portions of Monterey and Kern counties, a detail that reflects the area’s long-established regional boundaries.
