Area Code 826 History and Coverage
In June 2022, area code 826 was introduced as an overlay for Virginia's existing 540 numbering plan area. Virginia State Corporation Commission decided on an all-service overlay since remaining 540 numbers were nearly exhausted and thus existing 540 numbering was retained while adding further numbering capacity for the region.
Area code 540 was launched in July 1995 when this area code was split from 703 area code. The southwestern part of the 540 numbering plan area was broken out in September 2001 to create area code 276, leaving behind the 540/826 numbering plan area serving west and north-central regions of the state.
The shared 540 and 826 territory crosses the Blue Ridge and includes much of the Shenandoah Valley, then extends east toward Fredericksburg and north toward the West Virginia line.
