Area Code 840 History and Coverage
Area code 840 was introduced in 2021 as an overlay for California's established 909 numbering-plan area. The change added a second code to the same territory instead of dividing that territory through a geographic split. It was approved to provide additional telephone-number capacity within an Inland Empire region of Southern California that had long relied on 909.
The 909 code has been introduced in 1992 as part of the split of the 714 territory. The boundaries of 909 territory were modified in 2004, when area code 951 was introduced as the result of the geographical split covering the majority of Riverside County's territory. Consequently, this territory became separate from the 909 area, establishing the relationship between these two area codes.
By the time 840 arrived, the relevant numbering-plan question was not the creation of a separate local district, but the supply of numbers within the existing 909 territory. An overlay keeps the earlier code in place and adds a new code across the same mapped area. This arrangement ties 840 to the post-2004 909 footprint, whose northern edge reaches foothill communities near the San Gabriel Mountains.
