Area Code 909 History and Coverage

Area code 909 was introduced in November 1992 after splitting from the 714 area code which covered a large geographical coverage within Southern California. The area code 909 was created because of the growing development patterns of the Inland Empire in terms of telephone numbers demand in the late twentieth century. In addition, 714 itself was derived in 1951 as a result of splitting from California's original 213 numbering area.

Another split took place in 2004 resulting to the introduction of 951 area code from some portions of the area code 909. Therefore, 951 became the area code of most parts of the Riverside County within the former area code 909 while the remaining parts of the former 909 area code were retained. In addition, number conservation techniques were employed to conserve the availability of prefixes before the future number relief became necessary.

The California Public Utilities Commission granted overlay 840 for the remaining area code 909 in 2019 and new numbers would start using area code 840 from February 2021. The two area codes are now covering the same service area, which is a corridor from the Interstates 10 and the foothills of San Gabriel Valley.
