Area Code 843 History and Coverage
Area code 843 entered service in 1998 through a geographic split of South Carolina’s former 803 numbering plan area. The change responded to substantial growth in demand for telephone numbers across the state, which had already led to earlier revisions of the original statewide code. The new territory was drawn around the Atlantic coast, the Florence Local Access and Transport Area, and South Carolina portions of the Savannah and Wilmington transport regions.
That original layout connected several distinct telecommunications corridors: the resort-heavy Grand Strand, the Lowcountry’s port and tourism economy, and inland communities linked to Florence and the Pee Dee. A Local Access and Transport Area, commonly called a LATA, was part of the regional network structure used in the modernized U.S. telephone system after the 1984 AT&T divestiture.
Further demand for more phone numbers led to the introduction of an all-service overlay to the 843 area code in 2013. In 2015, area code 854 was introduced to cover the same region as 843 in the form of an overlay.
