Area Code 854 History and Coverage

Area code 854 entered service on October 19, 2015, as an overlay for South Carolina’s existing 843 numbering plan area. The South Carolina Public Service Commission approved the relief plan in December 2013 after numbering forecasts showed a need for additional telephone numbers in the coastal region.

The overlay approach kept established 843 numbers in place while allowing 854 to be assigned across the same service territory. In North American Numbering Plan terms, both codes form a single overlay complex, so the code itself does not identify a separate county or municipality within the region.

Its coverage reaches across much of the state’s eastern side, from the Lowcountry and the Grand Strand to inland communities around Florence. The area includes resorts, ports, military bases and suburban regions in the same manner as the 843 numbering region. The number 854 is recorded by NANPA as one of the new area codes of the United States in 2015; 843 is considered to be its parent code.
