Area Code 848 History and Coverage

Area code 848 was introduced in 2001 as an overlay on the existing 732 territory, adding a second numbering code without redrawing the region’s boundaries. The addition expanded number availability for a long-developed part of New Jersey with established residential, commercial, and transportation networks. Unlike a geographic split, an overlay leaves the earlier code in place while the added code covers the same territory.

The underlying 732 territory had been formed in 1997 through a split from area code 908. That division reorganized central New Jersey’s numbering geography, and 732 became associated with the state’s east-central section. The later 848 overlay retained those boundaries rather than creating another separate service area.

Area code 848 is one of the three-digit regional codes of the North American Numbering Plan and its footprint goes to the Atlantic coast along the territories of Monmouth and Ocean counties and continues to the territory of Middlesex County. Monmouth and Ocean counties lie to the Atlantic coast, while the territory of Middlesex county is located inland and around Raritan Bay and Raritan river.
