Area Code 732 History and Coverage

The 732 area code was assigned in 1997 through a geographical split of 908, which was a New Jersey area code allocated prior to 1997 to accommodate growing demand in excess of what the current numbering plan could manage. Geographical split of 908 area code involved the allocation of 732 to cover the eastern parts of 908 area code, which continued to exist in western and northwestern parts of central New Jersey. This geographical split was necessitated by the development that occurred along commuter routes and Jersey Shore, whereby there was growth in residential population, business and tourists coming into this part of New Jersey.

An area code overlay was introduced in 2001 as area code 848 within the 732 area. It neither replaced nor further divided the 732 area; rather it is used alongside the latter in covering the same geographical area. This was one of the earliest examples of an overlay in New Jersey as opposed to the conventional geographical split.

The development of the region has always been linked to its location lying between the New York metropolitan area and the Atlantic coastline. Such transportation routes as the Garden State Parkway link inland areas of central New Jersey to beaches in Monmouth County and the northern shoreline of Ocean County.
