Area Code 856 History and Coverage
Area code 856 became active on June 12, 1999 as a result of the geographic split of 609 due to increased demands for telephone numbers that occurred in the late 1990s. It was caused by an increase in businesses, use of fax machines, pagers and cellular phones, thus the necessity for additional numbering resources. The whole area of the state used to be under the area code 201 until 1956 when the split of 609 took place.
The 1999 relief plan established a separate numbering plan area for the southwest portion of the former 609 region. Its boundary reflected existing telephone-service patterns and included parts of Burlington County along with counties closer to the Delaware River and the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The territory extends south through communities near the Vineland-Millville corridor, placing 856 across a substantial share of New Jersey’s western and southern interior.
