Area Code 888 History and Coverage
Area code 888 was designated for toll-free service in 1995 and opened on March 1, 1996, after rapid demand had reduced the available supply of 800 numbers. The Federal Communications Commission treated the new code as immediate numbering relief for the established 800 service. Interstate toll-free service had begun in 1967, making 800 the category’s longstanding foundation.
Its arrival also followed a 1993 change that allowed toll-free customers to retain their numbers when moving among service providers. That change supported broader use by organizations serving customers across multiple markets. The 1995 designation created a new nongeographic numbering-plan area, giving 888 a shared service footprint throughout participating NANP countries and territories.
The launch of 888 became the first addition of toll-free codes after 800 code. Due to ongoing demand, the introduction of 877 followed on April 4, 1998 and 866 on July 29, 2000. Future additions included 855, 844, and 833. The area code 822 is designated for further toll-free services use.
