Area Code 914 History and Coverage

Area code 914 was created in 1947 as one of the five original area codes in the North American Numbering Plan for New York. This was a plan for the countrywide automated long distance calling system that covered Long Island, Westchester County, and lower Hudson Valley outside of New York City (area code 212).

In 1951, the area code underwent a geographical split creating area code 516 for Nassau and Suffolk counties of Long Island. With this split, a separate numbering plan area was created for Long Island, while the area code 914 continued to cover Westchester and the lower Hudson Valley.

Another split in area code 914 came into being on June 5, 2000 because of the forecasted depletion of phone number supplies. In this case, area code 845 took over most of the remaining area code 914’s territory in the Hudson Valley, while area code 914 was retained by Westchester County.

These two splits resulted in the current small footprint of area code 914 immediately north of New York City. It includes the territory of Westchester County, running from the Hudson River east to Connecticut border.
