Area Code 920 History and Coverage
Area code 920 entered service on July 26, 1997, through a geographic split of Wisconsin’s 414 numbering plan area. The change followed mounting demand for telephone numbers during the 1990s, as cellular service, pagers, modems, fax machines, and new telecommunications competitors increased the need for number resources. State regulators projected that the supply within 414 could be exhausted in early 1998. The commission considered a geographic split and an overlay before ordering the division after public hearings.
The geographic split allocated the northern half of the previous 414 territory to 920, consisting of the Sheboygan and Manitowoc regions; while Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha kept 414. This made area code 920 one of the many geographic numbering plan areas under the North American Numbering Plan.
An overlay proposal involving 274 was approved in 2008 and postponed several times as forecast conditions changed. Area code 274 entered service on May 5, 2023, as an overlay covering the same 920 territory, creating the 274/920 overlay complex.
