Area Code 936 History and Coverage
Area code 936 was implemented on February 19, 2000, as one of the results of a three-way geographic split of the Texas area code 409. As a consequence of this change, area code 979 was introduced, whereas 409 became the Beaumont area's number. According to the federal number plan database, both 936 and 979 were established in February 2000 and come from 409.
The new geographic area code 936 received a huge land area that covered communities in the Piney Woods and the northern suburbs of the greater Houston region. This area included not only rapidly growing communities in the Montgomery County but also some small communities in East Texas.
Since then, Area Code 936 has been a separate geographic area code. It is situated in the Lufkin and Nacogdoches area, covers some area near Huntsville, and also reaches down to Conroe. Some of its eastern regions are located close to the Angelina and Sabine National Forests.
