Area Code 409 History and Coverage

Area code 409 began to be used on March 19, 1983, after the geographical division of area code 713, which had a bigger portion of southeastern Texas before that date. Such a division was caused by the necessity to increase the capacity of the number pool, because the demand for new numbers in the regional code was growing fast. At the very beginning, 409 included a vast territory around the city of Houston, including Brazos Valley, East Texas and the coast.

In 2000, there happened a large-scale restructuring of the area code. Instead of applying an overlay, a three-way geographical division of 409 took place: area codes 936 and 979 were separated from 409, while the southeast stayed with 409. Consequently, 936 and 979 became the substitutes of 409 in covering the same area in its interior and western parts.

The development of the population along with the increasing use of telephony created the background of the described changes. There appeared an increasing necessity to get additional capacity, because of emergence of more homes, companies and services. The territory covered by 409 remains relatively small and is located in the upper coastal plain, including the counties of Galveston, as well as lower Neches and Sabine rivers.
