Area Code 940 History and Coverage

Area code 940 was created in 1997 as part of a triple geographic split of 817 due to increased need for phone numbers in the larger area covered by 817. The northern division became 940, the southern division became 254, while 817 continued serving the core of Fort Worth. Prior to this, 817 had covered a much larger portion of central and north-central Texas for many years.

The new boundary brought together a huge area. It covers portions of Denton, Wise, Cooke, Montague, Clay, Wichita, Archer, Young, Jack, and Palo Pinto counties, as well as sparsely populated counties to the west. These include outer Dallas–Fort Worth counties and communities further north and west, representing a large region created out of 817.

In the North American Numbering Plan, 940 is a general purpose geographic code for Texas. It serves an area from the Oklahoma border on the Red River south and west to Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County.
