Area Code 941 History and Coverage

Area code 941 entered service on May 28, 1995, after a geographic split of the 813 territory serving Florida’s Gulf Coast south of Tampa Bay. The new code initially covered a much larger part of southwest and south-central Florida than it does today, including inland and far-southern counties.

Florida’s numbering map changed again as 941 was divided to create 863. The decision was made in 1999, and the 863 code was activated in 2000 for the inland counties of the 941 code region. Lakeland, Winter Haven, Sebring, and Arcadia were thus transferred to 863 code, whereas 941 retained the coastal counties of its former territory. It is one of several Florida’s area code changes that occurred in late 1990s in connection with the split of the broad region codes into smaller geographic codes.

Another split took place in 2002, when 239 was created for Lee and Collier counties. Fort Myers and Naples moved into the new 239 territory, completing the two-step reduction of 941’s original footprint. The code began as a carveout from 813, then ceded its inland section to 863 and its southern Gulf Coast section to 239.
