Area Code 947 History and Coverage
Area code 947 was introduced on September 7, 2002, following the approval by the Michigan PSC as an overlay plan for area code 248. The need for the area code arose from the pressures of telephone number capacity in the already existing 248 region. Area code 248 itself came into being as a result of the splitting of area code 810 in 1997. As such, area code 947 is just one of the many overlays in the metro Detroit numbering plan.
In 2001, the Michigan Public Service Commission selected the overlay plan, and the North American Numbering Plan Administrator issued Planning Letter 283 to announce the new assignment. That planning document described the 248 territory as 21 rate centers that roughly matched Oakland County. Adding 947 preserved the existing service territory while creating an additional supply of phone numbers for new customers and services.
The 248/947 overlay includes communities near the northern part of Oakland County up to Oxford and Ortonville, extending down the county’s central suburbs to Northville and Livonia in Wayne County.
