Area Code 949 History and Coverage

Area code 949 was added to the numbering plan on April 17, 1998, by way of a geographic split from area code 714. It became the 20th area code of California and resulted from a series of numbering changes in Southern California where the territory at first belonged to area code 213. When the latter code was split in 1951, area code 714 was added and then the area was split twice more in 1982 and 1992, creating area codes 619 and 909 respectively. As a result of those splits, the territory of 714 shrank enough for it to become split again in 1998.

The 1998 split assigned the southern portion of the remaining 714 region to 949 while 714 continued to serve northern Orange County. This boundary placed many of Orange County’s coastal and southern inland communities under the new code, with a smaller part of the service area extending into the San Diego metropolitan statistical area.

In September 1999, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator identified a potential shortage of available numbers in 949. Public meetings followed in early 2000, and relief options included additional geographic splits and an overlay. A California Public Utilities Commission utilization study released in 2001 found substantial unused numbering resources, providing a detailed snapshot of number availability during the code’s early years. Today, 949 remains the primary area code for much of southern Orange County.
