Area Code 714 History and Coverage
Area code 714 was established in 1951 as a result of a geographical split from 213, which previously provided service to the entire Southern California as per the early North American Numbering Plan. Its original footprint extended well beyond its present boundaries, reaching areas east and south of metropolitan Los Angeles. As Southern California’s population and telephone demand grew, that territory was reduced through several later splits. Area code 619 separated from 714 in 1982, followed by 909 in 1992 and 949 in 1998.
The 949 split shifted most of southern Orange County into the new code, leaving 714 centered more heavily on the county’s northern and central communities. By the late 1990s, the remaining territory faced continued demand for telephone numbers. A planned overlay was delayed after statewide number-conservation measures were adopted, but area code 657 was ultimately added as an overlay in 2008. Both codes now cover the same numbering region.
The current 714/657 range mainly covers northern Orange County with some small portions in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. The geographic range of the area code now is mainly the developed inland and coastal plain along Orange County–Los Angeles County boundary, not the Southern California one that area code 714 initially covered.
