Area Code 952 History and Coverage
Area code 952 entered service on February 27, 2000, through a three-way geographic split of Minnesota’s 612 area code. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission adopted the arrangement after forecasts showed that the existing code’s numbering resources were nearing exhaustion. The plan retained 612 for Minneapolis and divided the surrounding metropolitan territory between the new 763 and 952 codes.
The decision addressed the need for additional numbering capacity across a rapidly developing metro telecommunications network. Commission staff evaluated 15 relief scenarios, including a two-way split and an overlay, before selecting the three-way plan. Earlier estimates for a two-way division projected about 9.8 years of remaining number capacity for the territory proposed for 952, while the additional division was expected to provide longer-lasting relief across the affected communities.
NANPA recorded the 612 split creating 763 and 952 in Planning Letter 200, issued on November 29, 1999. The final 952 boundary followed municipal lines for most of its route and extended south and west of Minneapolis to approximately Interstate 394.
