Area Code 970 History and Coverage
Area code 970 was put into effect on April 2, 1995, after a geographic split in Colorado’s original 303 area code. The result of the change led to the allocation of the northeastern and western part of the original 303 territory to area code 970, leaving the 303 area code to be allocated to the Denver metropolitan area alone. It provided a numbering plan for areas found in northern Front Range, mountain counties, Western Slope, and parts of the Eastern Plains.
Due to the high demand for telephone numbers in that area, another area code was added in December 2023 by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission in order to provide more numbers for new service while 970 numbers were already in use.
The 1995 change marked Colorado’s second geographic division of the original 303 area code. Area code 719 had been created from 303 in 1988 for southeastern Colorado, while 970 became the code for the state’s northern and western communities.
