Area Code 973 History and Coverage

Area code 973 was implemented in 1997 following the geographic splitting of New Jersey's 201 area code. 973 was needed since for many decades before the split, 201 covered a considerably larger part of New Jersey. The area code 201 was one of the original numbers of North American Numbering Plan that New Jersey received in 1947. Later in 1958, New Jersey divided 609 off for southern New Jersey and in 1991 divided 908 out of 201 area code.

In 1997, 973 was implemented over the significant part of the inland of northern New Jersey, while 201 area code remained focused near the Hudson River and Bergen County. 973 encompasses the lower Passaic valley, the developed parts of Morris County, and the towns around the Highlands and Kittatinny regions. This territory includes the traditional industrial centers, rail-connected suburbs, and more open country to the northwest.

An additional area code 862 came into use as an overlay in 2001 within the same area of 973. These two area codes now cover the same areas created in 1997, whose western limit approaches Sussex County in the Highlands.
