Area Code 201 History and Coverage
This area code became known in 1947 when North American Numbering Plan allocated only one code to New Jersey. Initially it covered whole New Jersey State which was quite rational at that time considering low number of codes used by the plan then. Further development and growth of population and economy led to division of this initial territory several times.
The first division involved allocation of south part of New Jersey to area code 609, and further division occurred in 1991 when geography split resulted in formation of area code 908 covering much of north and central parts of New Jersey. Area code 973 was formed in 1997 as a result of geographic split which left part of Essex, Morris, Passaic, and Sussex counties for this code. All above splits resulted in concentration of area code 201 within small but very developed territory of north-east.
Further demand for telephone numbers did not stop. In 2001 overlay split resulted in allocation of area code 551 which covers the same territory as 201 does. Both codes are still serving in the same region which has the following names – Meadowlands and lower Hackensack River valley.
