Area Code 978 History and Coverage
978 area code was launched on September 1, 1997, as a result of geographic split of 508 area code. This launch came as part of a larger plan to revise the numbering scheme of Eastern Massachusetts which resulted in creation of area code 781 as split from 617 on the same day. The newly established 978 area covered Merrimack Valley, Cape Ann, and north-central communities served by 508 area code, creating a northern regional area code including the Lowell-Lawrence area and coastal Essex County.
On April 25, 2000, the Department of Telecommunications and Energy decided to introduce area code 351 as overlay to 978 area code, making its first telephone numbers available in May 2001. Overlay area kept all 978 area code territory and added number capacity. State applied the same 2001 program for creation of 857 as overlay for 617, 339 as overlay for 781, and 774 as overlay for 508. Coastal Gloucester and inland Fitchburg belong to 978/351 shared territory according to area codes of Massachusetts.
