Area Code 979 History and Coverage

979 area code was implemented in the year 2000 as a result of a geographic split of the area code 409. This was because the area code 409 numbering region had to be split due to the expansion of the supply of phone numbers. As opposed to the numbering under the area code 409, the area covered by area code 979 is wider and encompasses most of the counties west of the Houston-Galveston region and south of East Texas Piney Woods region.

Its footprint includes various travel and economic corridors such as interior-coast routes and lower Colorado River regions. Agriculture-related communities, county seats, industrial zones and coastal-related locations are all incorporated within the same numbering zone. This is a geographic region that does not represent a new statewide service region. It also extends to parts of Gulf Coastal Plains where the terrain changes from prairie and agricultural zones to port and petrochemical employment regions.

In another numbering plan revision, the 979 area code was supplemented with 621 overlay. An overlay represents addition of a second area code to an existing geographic region as opposed to splitting. In the 979/621 arrangement, the original service footprint of 979 is left intact and includes inland parts of the Brazos and Colorado river valleys and extends to the coast by Brazoria County.
