Area Code 980 History and Coverage
Area code 980 went into service on March 15, 2001, as an overlay to area code 704. The introduction of a new code expanded the number supply available in the area since there were no enough numbering resources left in the 704 service area. The new code came at a time when there had been some previous changes to North Carolina’s area codes, where area code 704 used to cover the whole state at the time of North American Numbering Plan introduction in 1947 before losing some territories, including splitting into 910 in 1993 and 828 in 1999.
704/980 covers a large part of south-central Piedmont in North Carolina. The service area covers all the way north through Statesville and Salisbury, west towards Shelby and Lincolnton, east to Albemarle and south towards Marshville and Wadesboro in Union and Anson County respectively.
