Area Code 704 History and Coverage

Allocated to North Carolina in 1947, area code 704 was among the original North American Numbering Plan codes and covered all of North Carolina initially. Increasing need for telephone numbers in North Carolina resulted in the splitting of 704 geographically in 1954, which created 919 for eastern parts of the state. This left 704 to cover the western parts of North Carolina.

The split that gave birth to 828 from western and northwestern regions of 704’s territory resulted in 704 covering south-central Piedmont more directly. The 980 area code was introduced as an overlay, and thus, 704 and 980 cover the same geographic region rather than having different geographic areas allocated to them. This was a decision made based on the allocation of telephone numbers in the region and not because of the redrawing of state boundaries or the organization of counties.

The area code currently covers the territory up to the South Carolina line and further north, encompassing the regions linked with Union, Rowan, Iredell, and Cleveland counties. Included into the region is the well-known Piedmont industrial belt and suburbanizing counties around the state line. Blue Ridge and most of far western North Carolina belong to 828.
