Area Code 983 History and Coverage
Area code 983 entered service on June 17, 2022, after the Colorado Public Utilities Commission approved it in 2021 to provide additional numbering resources for the established 303/720 service area.
This development came after many years of modifications of the original 303 area in Colorado. When 303 area code was introduced in 1947, it covered the entire state. The 719 split went into effect in 1988 and created a separate area code for southern and eastern parts of Colorado. In 1995, the 970 split separated the state’s northern and western regions from 303.
Continuing demand for telephone numbers in the Denver-centered portion of the remaining 303 territory led to the addition of 720 as an overlay in 1998. Area code 983 became the next overlay in the same region, placing three area codes within one shared numbering area. Colorado regulators cited demand for new numbers in the metropolitan area when authorizing the code.
Area code 303/720/983 is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which provides a system of phone numbering in the USA, Canada, and participating Caribbean nations. Geographical coverage of area code 983 shows how the reduction of 303 area code took place.
