Area Code 984 History and Coverage
Area code 984 went into service on March 31, 2012, as a distributed overlay for all services for the North Carolina 919 area. The North Carolina Utilities Commission adopted the implementation plan on June 21, 2011, due to the need of telecommunications companies for extra numbering resources in order to provide new residential, business, wireless, and other kinds of telephone services.
Planning for relief in the 919 region had begun earlier. In 2001, the commission selected a distributed overlay approach while pursuing number-conservation measures, including thousands-block number pooling, to extend the available supply in the existing area. Those efforts delayed the introduction of the new code while demand continued to grow.
The 984 overlay was placed within the established 919 boundary, allowing the region to add new phone numbers without a geographic division of the service area.
