Area Code 985 History and Coverage

Area code 985 became operational in February 2001 because there was an increasing need for telephone numbers that required splitting of area code 504 geographically. The geographical split was preceded by reducing the state-wide coverage of area code 504 – in 1957 area code 318 was allocated to northern and western parts of Louisiana, while area code 225 was allocated to the Baton Rouge region in 1998.

The geographic split in 2001 kept 504 area code for New Orleans core and assigned 985 to the wide geographic region surrounding the core. The territory of this area code covered the Northshore, river communities to the west of New Orleans and coastal parishes going toward the Gulf of Mexico. Communities of St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish share the code with communities of Bayou Lafourche and Terrebonne.

985 area code represents geographic numbering plan area of Louisiana and remains separate from 504. It's creation marked the final geographic division of the original 504 territory after the 1998 assignment of area code 225.
