Area Code 214 History and Coverage

Area code 214 is one of the original codes which were assigned in 1947 under the North American Numbering Plan. The original boundary of the code applied to a much bigger area of northeast Texas in comparison to the current boundary. It is through a geographic split that in 1954 817 was separated from 214 which resulted in the division of Fort Worth side from 214. A split that occurred in 1990 led to the formation of 903, leaving 903 to serve areas like Tyler and Longview.

It is through another phase of numbers resources planning that 214 was further decreased. Through a geographic split that occurred in 1996, 972 was split off from 214 with 214 being retained for a central part of the metro region. A year after, the former boundary was eliminated, and 469 was formed as an overlay for the entire 214/972 region. Therefore, 214 and 972 began serving the same area along with 469 instead of each serving their own areas.

An additional overlay, 945, has been allocated to the area without making any change to the outer boundaries of the regions. The above changes show how 214 has come to be confined in the central metro region as compared to covering northeast Texas while 903 covers towards east of Tyler and Longview.
