Area Code 972 History and Coverage
Area code 972 was assigned on September 14, 1996, through a geographic split of 214 to add capacity after the older code’s available numbers had been exhausted. The initial design used a donut-shaped division, with 214 retained in the inner portion of the service territory and 972 assigned around it. By 1999, the Public Utility Commission of Texas had removed that boundary, creating a combined overlay area for 214 and 972.
The revised arrangement allowed both codes to be assigned throughout the same territory as demand for telephone numbers continued to grow. In 1999, 469 became the third overlay area code within the same area following an increase in demands from competing telecommunications companies seeking new number blocks. According to Texas regulators, the 972 split was among the several measures taken as part of numbering plan relief at the time. Four years later, in 2020, the fourth area code, 945, was established to be used in the area as supplies of 214, 469, and 972 numbers were nearing exhaustion.
