Area Code 227 History and Coverage
Area code 227 became operational in 2023 as an overlay to the long-standing 301 and 240 numbering territory of Maryland. Area code 301 is the original 1947 numbering code in the North American Numbering Plan that was used in all of Maryland. With the suburban expansion and increased need for telephone numbers, there were some adjustments made to the region’s numbering system. In 1991, area code 410 was split from 301 to create a separate area for Baltimore and eastern Maryland while area code 240 was added as an overlay to the rest of the 301 numbering territory in 1997.
The implementation of the 227 area code expanded the pool of number capacity without modifying the existing geographic territory of the 301 and 240 codes. The geographic territory covered by the 227 area code is mainly in the Washington metropolitan area on the Maryland side including Prince George’s County and Montgomery County. The same numbering region extends towards the Chesapeake Bay and west along the Potomac River to include Washington County, Allegany County, and Garrett County. Hagerstown and Cumberland are in the western part of this territory while southern Maryland belongs to the 301, 240, and 227 area.
