Area Code 267 History and Coverage

The introduction of 267 took place in 1999 as an overlay of the already existing 215 area code plan. This area code plan became one of the first to be established in the framework of the North American Numbering Plan. It was needed because of the ongoing development in southeastern Pennsylvania, where there was a growing demand for phone numbers connected with a rapid increase of population in suburban areas and with mobile telephones, fax lines, and other telecommunications services. Instead of creating two separate territories of 215 and 267, the second one was simply added to the former.

The development of the territory was based on a combination of a densely populated urban core and older boroughs, rail suburbs, commercial zones, and postwar residential neighborhoods. Established centers in Bucks, Montgomery, and Delaware counties are located alongside office parks, and major roads leading to the Delaware River and the border of New Jersey. This resulted in the necessity to provide number services not only in the central city but also in the rest of the region.

An additional overlay was introduced in 2018 with the name of 445 area code. They both together represent the territory that is characteristic of the Delaware Valley of southeastern Pennsylvania.
