Area Code 215 History and Coverage
Area code 215 is a legacy code of the 1947 North American Numbering Plan which included a much larger territory of southeastern Pennsylvania at that time. An area split in 1994 created area code 610 for the western and northern sections of the original 215 area. As a result, most of the Lehigh Valley territory along with other outer suburbs were transferred into area code 610, while the 215 code became limited to a narrower section of southeastern Pennsylvania closer to the Delaware River.
An expansion of available phone numbers became quite urgent in later years. The reasons for the need for more telephone numbers in Pennsylvania, as explained by state regulators, were the growing use of cell phones and extra residential phone lines. An alternative to a geographic split of the area left under 215 was an introduction of area code 267 as an overlay in June 1999, with both of the codes applying to the same numbering plan area.
Further growth of demand resulted in an introduction of yet another overlay code. Area code 445 began operation on March 3, 2018, along with the two older codes. Measures to conserve telephone numbers, such as thousands-block pooling, have also been utilized in Pennsylvania. The current three-code arrangement includes some territory of Lehigh and Berks counties beyond the original core area.
