Area Code 445 History and Coverage
Area code 445 was introduced in 2018 and became an overlay for the pre-existing 215 and 267 numbering area in southeastern Pennsylvania. Its history goes back to 1947 when 215 area code became one of the initial North American area codes and it used to cover much larger territories of eastern Pennsylvania than it does now. In 1994, as a result of the geographic split, area code 610 was created out of the pre-existing 215 territory and left a compact area in the inner Delaware Valley. Area code 267 was introduced as an overlay in 1999, covering the rest of the 215 territory.
The introduction of 445 was just another step in this scheme without any changes of the borders. The numbering area depends on the developed Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River area and is defined by its old street grid, railroad suburbs, highway and business zones which form a tightly interconnected area. It borders on New Jersey to the east, and the territory of 610 starts outside the majority of the inner suburbs which were preserved in 215 numbering area after the 1994 split.
