Area Code 910 History and Coverage
Area code 910 was introduced in November 1993 with a geographic split of the North Carolina 919 area code. With the addition of the 910 area code, the state got one more numbering plan area as the need for phone number capacity exceeded the coverage of the established 704 and 919 area codes. Originally, 910 had a much broader coverage, extending to the Piedmont Triad and other western parts of North Carolina.
A second geographic split took effect in December 1997, creating area code 336 for the Triad and much of the former western 910 territory. That revision concentrated 910 in the state’s southeastern counties, with Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson, and New Hanover among the principal areas served.
In 2021, area code 472 was approved by North Carolina Utilities Commission as an overlay in the state. Since October 2022, area code 472 has been serving customers along with the existing area code 910 in southeastern North Carolina from Fayetteville to Cape Fear coast.
