Area Code 347 History and Coverage
As an overlay, area code 347 was introduced in order to support the needs of 718 area code in New York City in 1999. Originally, area code 718 had been introduced in 1984 after geographical splitting from 212. At that time, almost all boroughs, except for Manhattan, were geographically split to get their own number plan area. Due to high demand for numbering plan resources because of expansion of wireless, paging and other services in the region by the late 1990s, the 347 overlay was introduced in order to increase capacity of the 718 area code without displacement. Besides, there is an additional 929 overlay introduced in 2011 for 718/347 territory. There is also an area code 917 operating within the same New York City numbering plan area which had been introduced before.
Infrastructure wise, the territory constitutes a highly populated urban area, whose separate parts are connected not only by bridges and tunnels, but also by railroads and ferries rather than an uninterrupted landmass. Most of the territory belongs to the western part of Long Island, located to the east of Manhattan, while another part is situated opposite to Upper New York Bay. All these areas operate in the Eastern Time Zone and are located to the north of Harlem River.
