Area Code 929 History and Coverage

Area code 929 was introduced on April 16, 2011, as an overlay designated to relieve the 347/718 numbering area. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator assigned this code as an all-service overlay in response to the New York Public Service Commission decision made on January 7, 2010. This step was taken because the forecasted date for exhaustion of available numbers in the existing area was the second quarter of 2012.

The code joined a numbering plan with roots in the 1984 geographic split that created 718 from 212 for the city’s outer-borough service area. That footprint expanded in 1992 when the Bronx and Marble Hill moved from 212 to 718. Area code 347 was added as an overlay in 1999, establishing the service region into which 929 was introduced. The 2011 overlay preserved that geography while expanding the region’s supply of telephone numbers.

Growing demand led to further modification of the numbering plan, on January 25, 2025, the New York Public Service Commission adopted 465 as the new all-services overlay for the 347/718/917/929 complex. Area code 465 was launched on June 18, 2026.
