Area Code 412 History and Coverage
Area code 412 was assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes, when Pennsylvania's telephone numbering map used 215 in the southeast, 717 across much of the central portion, and 412 in the west. Its first footprint extended well beyond the compact territory associated with it today. A 1957 geographic split created area code 814 from part of 412's former territory, separating much of the state's central and northwestern interior from the western code. The 1957 change was an early example of Pennsylvania's evolving numbering boundaries, decades before later demand required another split.
The second important boundary change came in 1998, when area code 724 was created through another geographical split. This separated outer southwest Pennsylvania from 412, leaving it with its current concentrated area, the densely developed river valley area where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers meet. The two codes cover a very tight geographic area, with 724 covering most of the surrounding areas. Overlay code 878 covers both of the two area codes.
