Area Code 878 History and Coverage
Area code 878 was introduced in 2001 following relief planning for the already existing 412 and 724 numbering plans of western Pennsylvania. The background to 878 dates back to 1947, when 412 was one of the four North American Numbering Plan area codes in Pennsylvania. 412 underwent geographic split on February 1, 1998, resulting in 724 from most of the area formerly covered by 412. 412 area remained mostly Allegheny County centered.
In November 1999, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator declared 412 near exhausting numbers. On January 19, 2000, industry representatives agreed to introduce multiple all-services overlay covering 412 and 724 areas. This decision provided the grounds for introduction of 878 and used boundaries created through the 1998 split.
Introduction of 878 was the part of the broader numbering plan expansion in Pennsylvania. Between 1997 and 2000, 724 was introduced in greater Pittsburgh area, 570 in northeastern area, and 610, 484, and 267 in southeastern area of the state. By the time of 878 introduction, the 1998 split became the basis for three-codes numbering system of western Pennsylvania.
