Area Code 724 History and Coverage

Area code 724 was introduced on February 1, 1998, as the result of Pennsylvania’s division of existing 412 numbering plan area. As a result, much of the Pittsburgh vicinity got the new area code 724 whereas 412 was kept for Pittsburgh and the inner suburbs.

The split came during a period when Pennsylvania’s established area codes faced growing demand for additional telephone numbers. Mobile phones, fax lines, and separate residential and business connections increased the need for numbering resources across the state. Western Pennsylvania’s arrangement was especially notable because 724 formed a broad band around the more compact 412 region rather than replacing it in one direction.

In 2001, the overlay area code 878 was introduced in order to serve the 412 and 724 regions. Again, the introduction of this new code in no way affected the boundaries of 724 numbering plan area but just provided an extra number in the southwestern Pennsylvania numbering area.

The territory of the 724 numbering plan area covers the region from Lawrence and Mercer counties bordering Ohio through Butler and Westmoreland counties, and then further south toward Washington and Fayette counties bordering West Virginia and Maryland.
