Area Code 443 History and Coverage
Area code 443 was introduced in 1997 as an overlay on Maryland’s existing 410 numbering-plan area. The 410 code itself had been created in 1991 through a geographic split from 301, separating much of central and eastern Maryland from the western and Washington-area portion of the state. Adding 443 allowed additional telephone numbers to be assigned without redrawing that established boundary.
The service area footprint of the number follows the Chesapeake Bay region and expands towards the Delmarva Peninsula in Maryland as well as north towards the border with Pennsylvania. The same numbering plan area contains both bay-side counties and suburbs with old towns having dense population. This area code has been serving those regions for many years which have various settlement patterns.
