Area Code 410 History and Coverage
Area code 410 entered service in 1991, when Maryland’s long-standing 301 territory was divided geographically to accommodate growing telephone-number demand. Before that split, 301 had served the entire state since the original North American numbering plan assignments in 1947. The change made 410 Maryland’s second area code, while 301 remained associated with western Maryland and much of the Washington suburban region.
As a result of increasing demand, area code 443 was introduced in 1997 as an overlay for 410, serving the same area without replacing it. In 2012, the third overlay, area code 667, was introduced, forming a three code numbering area in this region.
The 410/443/667 region includes much of the Chesapeake Bay’s Eastern Shore, a peninsula shaped by the bay, the Delaware boundary, and the Atlantic coast. Its geography differs from the 301 and 240 region to the west, which includes many communities closer to Washington. Cecil County near the Delaware line and Worcester County along Maryland’s Atlantic shore are within the 410/443/667 service region.
