Area Code 480 History and Coverage

Area code 480 came into existence in 1999 as part of a three-way geographic split of the long-serving 602 which was used in the Phoenix metropolitan area. In this, there was separation of the expanding metro into separate numbering plans; 602 was kept for the central Phoenix, 623 for western parts of the valley, and 480 applied to the east of the valley. This was a geographic split not overlay and gave more numbering options for the valley.

The territory of 480 lies within the Maricopa County of the east side of the Salt River Valley. The territory of 480 covers the developed valley and not the northern plateau or the southeastern borderland of Arizona that uses different area codes. This area code is located in the setting where it operates under the Mountain Standard Time zone of Arizona.

The introduction of an overlay plan brought area code 943 to be used with 480. As opposed to the 1999 split plan, it did not involve drawing new boundaries but simply assigned another area code to serve the existing region. Area code 602 has been serving Arizona since its creation in 1947, covering the whole state initially but later being split to cover just the Phoenix area. The first addition to 602 came in 1995 through the creation of 520.
