Area Code 623 History and Coverage

Area code 623 was introduced in 1999 through a geographic split of Arizona’s 602 numbering-plan area. The reorganization also produced 480, dividing the fast-growing metropolitan region among separate central, eastern, and western or northern number assignments. This was a split rather than an overlay, with each code receiving a defined geographic territory from the former 602 service area.

The area covered by area code 623 emerged with the development of large sections of Maricopa County in the second half of the twentieth century. Construction of houses and businesses expanded over the desert flatlands, especially along main transport arteries like the I-10 and Loop 101 highways. This made it necessary to allocate more phone numbers in the expanding metropolitan area outside the older core.

From the geographic perspective, the area is a mixture of dense suburban development with irrigated farmlands, desert preserves, and foothills of mountains. The western edge approaches the White Tank Mountains, which serve as a boundary of the metro area. The northern parts consist of settlements and unincorporated areas that have developed at their own pace from the central valley. This part of Arizona uses Mountain Standard Time all year round, without daylight savings.
