Area Code 602 History and Coverage

Area code 602 was assigned to Arizona in 1947 as part of the original North American Numbering Plan. For decades, it was the state’s only code, an arrangement that matched a much smaller telephone network. Numbering relief followed growth in demand: a 1995 geographic split created 520 for areas outside the Phoenix metropolitan area, leaving 602 with the metro core. A second geographic division took effect in 1999. It established 480 for much of the East Valley and 623 for the West Valley, while 602 remained associated with central Phoenix.

Those changes show the limits of a three-digit numbering plan area as a fast-growing metropolitan region needs additional telephone numbers. Regulators can address that pressure through a geographic split or an overlay. Arizona later adopted a boundary-elimination overlay for 480, 602, and 623, placing the three codes in one shared metropolitan numbering region rather than maintaining separate east, central, and west boundaries. The resulting territory follows the developed Salt River Valley across Maricopa County, linking the East Valley with communities toward the county’s western edge.
