Area Code 484 History and Coverage

484 area code became an overlay to the 610 number plan area in 1999. The 610 number plan area itself originated in 1994 as a result of a geographic split from 215. Thus, the overlay increased the number of numbering options in the existing framework of 610 boundaries without changing them. The introduction of 484 coincided with the time of growing demand for phone and wireless numbers in the area.

As mentioned above, the 610 plan separated the core of Philadelphia area from the rest of Pennsylvania communities. This was the first geographic split providing the base for the following overlay introduced in 1999. In this geography, the plan includes Berks County around Reading, the river Schuylkill valley of the western part of Montgomery County and counties of Chester and Delaware along the border with the neighboring state. Those include the historic centers of counties, manufacturing towns and suburbs with their unique patterns of development throughout the twentieth century. Finally, the plan includes Northampton County in which the Delaware River constitutes the eastern border of the state near Easton.

In addition, Pennsylvania introduced 835 area code in 2022 as an overlay of the same 610 and 484 territories. Thus, the area codes represent the consecutive numbering sequence starting from 1994's separation of 215 plan. Reading in Berks County becomes the northern center of this plan's territory.
